Day 14, 8/28/08

Everything really came together today for a great day on the bikes. We made it to our destination and covered 50 miles. The weather was perfect. Partly sunny, cool or warm temperatures. Part of the route was along the coast, part inland. Both were beautiful. The route that went along the coast went along 101, so there was a bit more traffic. Especially scary were the logging trucks and worse, the Winnebagos. One scary part was when we went through a tunnel between Arch Cape and Manzanita.

The first town we hit out of Seaside was Cannon Beach. A bit "touristy", but a very cool little beach town. We broke for lunch in Manzanita. We finally found an oyster knife and bought it. You just never know when you are going to run into some oysters. After lunch we stopped by the fish market. The fish looked so fresh. They had oysters, but since it would be another 4 hours until we could eat them, we decided to wait to see if we could find some later on.

Our destination was Tillamook. Yep, where the cheese comes from. We stopped by the cheese factory and ran in for a few samples. As we were leaving the parking lot, we noticed that right across the street was the fish market. This must be our lucky day. We bought 2 kinds of oysters. Both came from Netarts bay. No fresh water runs into this bay, so no agricultural runoff, only salt water. We bought a dozen and a half for around $11. The fish monger packed them with some ice and we had them as appetizers for dinner. Indescribably delicious. So fresh. Didn't require any additional condiments. Hopefully we get the chance to find more along our journey.

We camped at the Big Barn Marina & RV. It was actually a very nice place. Only $10/night. No other tent campers. The hot showers worked great. Bathroom facility was new and a short walk from our tent. Had our tent set up and showered around 8 pm. Dinner was mac & cheese with chunks of ground pork, cucumber salad from the deli and these bar cookie things called nanaimo. We had never had those before, but they were awesome. Picked up a bottle of citrus degreaser and a brush today. Tomorrow we will be cleaning our drive trains as they have picked up a lot of debris riding in the rain.
